My name is Karen Sue (McGlamery) Ballou. I was born in Michigan in 1975 and have always lived in the Great Lakes state. I currently reside in Lansing, Michigan, with my husband, Ben, our two children, two cats and two dogs.
As a child, I often played school with my brother and sister. My sister and I also played ‘office’ and were secretaries. Another favorite was setting up a desk as though we were news anchors, shuffling papers and giving serious reports about the weather and heaven only knows what else. In those early years, I wanted to be a veterinarian, a teacher, a reporter, a secretary & a mom. I later aspired to being a writer, a novelist, in particular, and still aspire to be a poet. Two of my childhood dreams came true, as I am a mom and a lowly secretary – be careful what you wish for!
I enjoy playing board games with friends and family, love all kinds of music, absolutely adore games involving words, I get lost in photography and I am energized by others who are creative. I continue to write poetry and start the occasional novel, though I’ve yet to finish one. As I said, I enjoy photography & also manipulating/editing photos. I paint when I have time and find working with my hands to fill an empty space with color, movement and design, even if the painting is awful, to be very rewarding.
Many hats, I wear, then. I am a Christian striving for a closer relationship with God. I am a wife, a mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend. Other words that describe me have to include my diagnoses both physical and mental, though they don’t define me. I live with Type II Diabetes, Anxiety, Bipolar Disorder (mainly depression) and Borderline Personality Disorder. I am a survivor of child sexual abuse. All of these things have shaped me, but I continue to be a work in progress.
